Yes, it is sad to see the old beach bars on Otres gone, but Sihanoukville went from a $5-$15/night backpacker haven to an average $45-$65/night hotel higher paying tourist. Hard to argue with that for the economic development of the city… The new roads also opened up access to the beaches for locals. I am now seeing many unfinished buildings start construction again. Hopefully things will turn better this year after the post-election economic doldrums.

Hi Moumita
The bioluminescence does only occur certain times of the year on the Cambodian islands. Its never 100% with nature but it typically runs alongside the high season from October to April. Also for best viewing you are best to do so on a cloudy night when there is minimal moonlight. so super dark.

There is an expressway connecting Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. It takes only a 2 hours drive, around 12 USD for the toll. The city center is clean, with not much construction work that I could see. Just that there are plenty of “abandoned” buildings around the city that were left over after the We put a night in Sihanoukville and headed to Koh Rong the next noon.

Visited a few beaches in Koh Rong – Som San Beach, White Sand Beach and Royal Sand Beach, all truly gorgeous. I am from KL City, hence was really excited to see and walk in the crystal clear sea water.

Understand that the local government is missioned to “rebuild” Sihanoukville to be an offshore financial hub with a mega masterplan – “Bay of Lights” Project. Anyhow, the location is further afield from the center.

My view, Sihanoukville is in transformation. The current state is much better than pre-2019 as the major development/ construction activities in the city center are mostly completed. I personally feel quite ok walking around the city without the fear of being the target of someone. Anyhow, my main destination is Koh Rong while the mainland of Sihanoukville is just for a quick stop-over.
