Upon getting through others on our bus from Chiang Mai had been scammed 40 and 20bht. We are older travellers and probably looked like easier targets. Official was a younger woman and two young female travellers did not get scammed. We initially requested to pay by credit card which got a look. But as we had the 100bht we handed it over. Sorry for those who come after Feb 2025. Try the credit card, no cash approach as it appeared to go straight into her bag.

Basically some longer term foreigner Laos residents have found themselves pawned off to the police because they aleither got caught doing something they shouldn’t or they are just without any scruples. Foreigner befriends traveler. Arranges some weed or something a bit more designer for his new friend the traveller. Hi’s and bye’s and off he goes, little do you know that the door is coming off 15 mins after returning to your hostek or hotel. One police raid later, they then explain that you are looking at 5-10 years but can arrange your case for a certain amount and then you will either be deported and BB lack listed or not. (That’s what’s they tell you,) If this happens 99% of these victims are deported and added to the borders black list so be just as careful of long term foreigners in Laos as Laotian
