I crossed the Mekhong River/border by boat from Chiang Khong, Thailand to Houay Xai, Lao before they had built that “Friendship Bridge” where all non-locals/foreigners must now cross. I was to catch a boat at Houay Xai to Luang Prabang, Lao. It was a very simple 15 minute process to cross the border/river by boat back then then but now you must take the bridge which is completely out of town and a big loop to get to Houay Xai. Local hotel and guest house owners at both towns are missing out from the forced detour of foreigners crossing the border.

In reply to Deborah. Hey Deborah, Yes you do need to bring one passport photo, otherwise, they can do one for you at the border for $1.00, though this process can take a while as you will be arriving with plenty of others from the bus. I recommend just bringing one along with you.
