Can You Swim Anywhere In Ambergris Caye?
While you can technically swim anywhere on the island, we recommend sticking to designated swimming areas.
Some areas choose to keep seagrass intact as it plays a crucial role in preventing beach erosion, which means that you might not find pristine white sand beaches throughout.
Additionally, certain locations construct sea walls as a measure to combat erosion. However, many places still boast beautiful beaches.
As a result, sandy beaches are scarce on the island, with the majority being artificially created rather than naturally occurring.
Typically the terrain gently slopes towards the water, where abundant seagrass thrives. Although it may not resemble a typical beach, swimming is still possible in this area.
Whats The Sargassum Situation In Ambergris Caye?
Sargassum, a type of seaweed, has been a growing concern in the Caribbean due to its impact on beaches and marine life. Ambergris Caye is no exception and experiences varying levels of sargassum throughout the year.
In recent years, efforts have been made to address this issue, such as installing sargassum barriers and conducting regular cleanups.
I visited in April and June and the sargassum situation was pretty bad and smelly. The locals and resort workers were in a constant battle to rake it up, but then it just sat in piles around.
For the best swimming beaches during this time you are actually better off swimming from a pier away from the shore if you are on Ambergris Caye during this time or better yet, hop a snorkeling tour from San Pedro.
Sargassum is a natural occurrence in the Caribbean and can never be fully predicted or controlled. Travelers need to understand this and be prepared for potential sargassum during their stay.
I recommend checking out Sargassum Monitoring for the latest information.
