No doubt Koh Phangan is a beautiful paradise island that brings in tourists all year round. Perhaps, the main reason for visiting is the full moon party. Though, if you are willing to explore further you will come across some incredible beaches.
However, where do you start when it comes to finding out what Koh Phangan beaches are worth visiting? I mean you are on holiday and don’t want to waste your time finding the perfect spot!
One of my favorite islands in Thailand is Koh Phangan. It’s beautiful with a great vibe, and also large enough that it never seems too crowded, plus it’s so easy to hire a scooter and explore. I have been lucky enough to visit a few times over my trips to Thailand.

1. Haad Chao Phao
Haad Chao Phao is one of the quieter beaches here. It is slightly rocky, though there is still plenty of clean white sand around. It is possible to swim here no matter if it is low tide or high tide and the rocks provide a perfect place to snorkel around.
If you are a confident swimmer you can paddle out 100 meters where the reef can be found.
Here you will find plenty of beautiful corals and exciting sea life making it one of the top spots for snorkeling in Koh Phangan.
Nearby you will find plenty of resorts and restaurants where you can stop and have lunch.
How To Get There: 15 minute drive from Thongsala. Hidden off the main road, just pull over and down an overgrown path is where we found Haad Chao Phao.
2. Leela Beach
One of the most ‘Instagram famous’ beaches around Koh Phangan is Leela Beach. Known for its pristine white sand, calm blue waters, and a swing between two coconut trees, plenty of photos are taken here.
Like many places in Koh Phangan you will need to walk through a resort to access it but it is well worth it. We just acted confident like we belonged there and everything was fine.
Also, because of the awkward access to the beach, it is mainly just filled with resort-goers. Leela Beach is not as crowded as the popular Haad Rin making it a great place to relax in this busy corner of Koh Phangan.
How To Get There: An easy 10 minute stroll from Haad Rin, where the famous Full Moon Party is held. This spot is super accessible.
3. Haad Salad
My hands-down favorite choice is Haad Salad. This piece of paradise is the perfect place to relax on the northern side of this island.
Slightly hidden again it can be a bit of a hassle to get to, but trust me it is well worth the adventure. We ended up parking in one of the quieter resorts.
There was pay for parking sign at the nearby restaurant, but there was legitimately nobody in there so we just risked it.
At the beach, there is crystal white sand and surrounding cliffs covered in swaying palm trees. This is a much more family-friendly place when compared to the alcohol-fueled Haad Rin. Therefore if you aren’t a partier, Haad Salad could be the perfect place to stay!
If you are into discovering the underwater world Haad Salad has some of the best snorkeling in Koh Phangan.
You will have to head out 80 meters to find the coral, though if you wait for low tide you can walk out some of the ways. Expect to find colorful small fish with great visibility.
How To Get There: Haad Salad is located on the North East of the island and it takes roughly 25 minutes to reach from Thong Sala Pier.
4. Chalok Lum Beach
An easy spot to get to with no need to sneak through any resorts is Chalok Lum Beach. Stretching over 2 and a half kilometers long it is never overcrowded.
The middle is mainly just a fishing area. Here is where you can find some of those beautiful colorful longtail boats sitting in the beautiful blue waters.
On either side is where you can find areas where you can swim and relax. Though this is only through December to March, during other times of year you will likely have to plan your swim during the daily high tide.
This is also not the best beach for snorkeling off the shore due to all the fishermen who have destroyed the nearby coral reefs.
How To Get There: To get to Chalok Lum in Koh Phangan, you can take a taxi boat from Thong Sala Pier. The journey takes roughly 20 minutes and costs 400 THB / $11.50 each way. Alternatively, you can rent a scooter and drive using the road that runs straight through the middle of the island. The journey takes around 30 minutes.
5. Haad Rin
Welcome to the craziness of Haad Rin. No doubt if you are traveling to Koh Phangan during the busy full moon time you will find yourself here at some stage. Whether that’s partying to the early hours, watching a waterside fire spinning display, or simply sunbathing on the sand.
Sure, this isn’t the quietest or most beautiful beach to be found in Koh Phangan, but it certainly deserves an honorable mention.
Haad Rin Beach can be split into two different sections, Haad Rin Nok and Haad Rin Nai.
Haad Rin Nok is certainly a crazy party area where you will find yourself drinking on the sand in the early hours and hitting up the nearby bars and clubs.
The opposite of this is Haad Rin Nai which has a more relaxed bohemian atmosphere.
Overall Haad Rin is one of the biggest Koh Phangan beaches and is, therefore, one of the most crowded. It is also where you will find all the full moon party hostels.
If you are looking for a slice of paradise and some quiet time this is certainly where you will not want to be. If you are a backpacker looking to chill out with a beer, people-watch, and perhaps make some new friends there is no better option than Haad Rin.
How To Get There: To get to Haad Rin from Thong Sala, you can take a ferry from Thong Sala Pier to Haad Rin Pier. The ferry ride takes around 30 minutes and is a great way to enjoy the scenic beauty of the island. Alternatively, you can take a taxi which takes around 30 minutes and costs between 350 and 450 THB / $10.00 – $13.00.
6. Baan Tai Beach
During my time in Koh Phangan, we stayed on Baan Tai. Located on the southern coast of the island, it itself stretches all the way from Thongsala to Haad Rin Peninsula.
Covered in fine white sand and surrounded by swaying coconut palm trees this is the perfect place to relax. There are plenty of resorts, affordable guesthouses, and backpackers located right on Baan Tai Beach making it a perfect option for anyone looking for cheap beachfront accommodation.
Depending on the time of year, water currents, and weather, most of the time the water is beautifully blue. Unfortunately, this was not the case during my stay.
Nevertheless, it is an excellent for swimming with a slow gradient into the sea. I spent many evenings relaxing in the shallow waters watching the sun dip below the horizon.
The shore is extremely sandy so you don’t need to worry about rocks. Also during low tide, there is a long sandbar on which you can walk right out to sea!
If you are looking for an excellent place to watch the sunset Baan Tai Beach is one of your best options!
How To Get There: To get to Baan Tai, you can take a shared taxi (Songthaew) from the main port town of Thongsala. The main road from Thongsala runs parallel to the beach and has an extensive range of shops, motorbike rentals, bars, and restaurants.

7. Mae Haad – Best Snorkeling
No doubt Mae Haad Beach is one of the best spots for ocean lovers. It has gone through a lot of changes in recent years and road conditions have greatly improved providing easier access.
There are a few resorts located around Mae Haad. Though thanks to the roomy shoreline it never feels overcrowded stretching over 800 meters.
At low tide, there is a sandbank that joins Mae Haad to the small island of Koh Ma. I highly recommend exploring this section as this is where you can find the National Marine Park with excellent snorkeling.
The waters here are rich in sea life, from gorgeous coral reefs, turtles, and small reef sharks.
How To Get There: Mae Haad is located at the very northwest point of Koh Phangan. I recommend renting a scooter and exploring at your own pace. The roads are great if you go either straight up the middle of the island or around the west coast way.
8. Haad Yuan
Haad Yuan is a picturesque and secluded beach located on the southeast side of Koh Phangan. It is a small quiet bay with old-school island charm, making it an ideal place to experience tropical island life.
Known for its excellent swimming and relaxed vibes it’s nothing like the busier Haad Rin.
It is accessible only by boat, hiking or 4×4 jeep which also adds to its charm.
If you’re planning to visit Haad Yuan Beach, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry mosquito repellent and plenty of water. The hike to the beach can be quite an adventure.
How To Get There: To get to Haad Yuan, you can either take a boat from Haad Rin or hike through the jungle on the east coast for about 2 hours.
If you choose to take a boat, which is what I recommend, you can find a longtail boat at Haad Rin waiting for customers to take them to the east coast of the island. Depending on demand, prices vary slightly between 200 and 300 THB / $5.50 – $8.50 per person one way.
9. Haad Son / Secret Beach
Haad Son, also known as Secret Beach, is a 600-meter-long secluded bay located on the west coast. It is surrounded by tall coconut palms and white sand.
This is also a great place for snorkeling, with a coral reef located just a short swim away from the shore.
Haad Son Resort is located on a private stretch of sand, however, act like you belong and you will be fine. The resort has a popular bar called Koh Rahm, which is a great spot to grab a cold beer or cocktail.
If you’re looking for a perfect place to stay, Secret Beach Bungalows is a great option.
How To Get There: To get to Haad Son from Thongsala, the nearest ferry terminal, you can take a taxi, a shared taxi, or hire a scooter. It is located about 10 kilometers north of the ferry terminal.
10. Haad Yao
Haad Yao is a popular and beautiful beach located in the northwest of the island. It is over a kilometer long and is often referred to as the perfect paradise.
The sand is white and the water is crystal-clear, making it a great spot for swimming and sunbathing. You can also find a lively coral reef, perfect for snorkeling and diving.
One thing to note is that it is best to visit during high tide, as during low tide the water goes out so far making it impossible to swim.
How To Get There: You can take a taxi or rent a scooter and drive to Haad Yao. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes from Thong Sala.
11. Malibu Beach
Malibu Beach is located in the village of Chaloklum, Koh Phangan. It is part of the Malibu Beach Bungalows which you can find in the center of Chalok Lum Bay. From here are stunning views of the bay and mountains.
You will need to walk through the resort to access it, but it is 100% worth it.
The sand is silky white and the water is crystal clear and turquoise. The beach is becoming more and more popular, but during the off-season, it is still a very quiet spot. There are lots of palm trees and a small bar that often plays reggae music.
Malibu beach is best visited during high tide so you can make the most out of the gorgeous spot.
How To Get There: To get to Malibu Beach from Thongsala you can rent a scooter or simply take a taxi. First, you need to drive to the village of Chaloklum, which is located on the west side of Chaloklum Bay. Then, you can drive on to the Malibu Beach Bungalows on the main road.
Stop at the 7-Eleven and walk onto the road where you cross a concrete bridge and arrive.
It takes about 20 minutes by taxi and approximately half an hour by scooter from the pier where you arrive at Koh Phangan
12. Thong Nai Pan Noi & Thong Nai Pan Yai
Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai is a charming bay located in the northeast. It is surrounded by rocky, coconut tree-covered cliffs and lush jungles.
It is known for its soft white sand and turquoise warm sea. Thong Nai Pan Noi is considered one of the nicest beaches around Koh Phangan.
The bay is divided into two parts, Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai, which together form what is probably the most beautiful and popular spot on Koh Phangan. Thong Nai Pan Noi is the busiest of the two resort areas.
This spot is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and diving. It is also a great place to watch the sunrise.
How To Get There: To get to Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai from Thongsala, you can take a taxi, or car or hire a scooter. The distance between Thongsala and Thong Nai Pan Noi is approximately 10.4 km and it takes around 30 minutes to reach.
13. Bottle Beach
Bottle Beach is another beautiful and secluded spot. It is named after its protected cove, which is shaped like a bottle from above.
This is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the more popular beaches and enjoy some peace and quiet.
At Bottle Beach, you will be rewarded with white sand, green mountains, crystal clear water, and a big stretch of bay that you have almost entirely to yourself. The sand is soft and easy for walking, with almost no rocks. There are several restaurants and volleyball nets at the beach if you want to stick around longer and hang out.
If you’re looking for more scenery, there’s even a viewpoint you can hike to on the hill above. The trailhead starts behind one of the food shacks in the middle, near the river. Just look for the makeshift sign or ask a local to point it out to you.
Hiking to the viewpoint takes about 30-60 minutes going up. The trail is shaded, but it’s all uphill so it can be pretty full on in the midday heat. Make sure to bring water!
How To Get There: To get to Bottle Beach, you can hire a longtail boat from Chaloklum Beach or Haad Khom Beach for 150 THB / $7.00 per person, per way. The boat ride takes about 15 minutes and is a scenic journey through the Gulf of Thailand. Alternatively, you can hike to Bottle Beach from Haad Khom Beach, which takes about 1-2 hours one way.
14. Haad Khom
Haad Khom, also known as Coral Bay, is a small bay located in the northwest of the island. It is famous for its spectacular and colorful corals, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling.
Occasionally corals grow into the bay, but you can easily avoid it by following the sandy underwater paths. This spot is particularly popular with long-term vacationers who appreciate the relaxed, quiet atmosphere.
Haad Khom is located a 20 minutes walk from the conveniences of Chaloklum village. There are only four restaurants and the Coral Bar.
At the end of the road, there is also a path through the jungle that leads to Bottle Beach, just follow the bottles.
How To Get There: To get to Haad Khom, take the Police Road from Thong Sala and follow the signs to Chaloklum. There you turn left to Haad Khom.

15. Zen Beach
Next up, we have Zen Beach which is known for its golden sunsets and is a popular spot to be at dusk. Located on the west coast of the island, near Sri Thanu, it is home to a number of yoga studios, schools, and wellness retreats.
Also known as Naked Beach, it is a prime spot to watch the sunset. During the high season, it is filled with a lot of activity. There are dancers, drum beats, kids playing, and laid-back travelers sitting on the shore waiting for the sun to go down.
Every evening, there is a different kind of entertainment that visitors of all ages can appreciate.
The atmosphere here is quite special and enhanced by the magical colors of the sky as it changes for sunset.
The best time to visit is around 5 pm, which is perfect for you to grab a cocktail and find a comfortable spot as you soak up the sunset views.
How To Get There: Finding Zen Beach is easy, just go to the top of Sri Thanu, turn into the school, and then keep going. You will reach a fork in the road but take the right turn and park.
16. Thong Sala Beach
The town of Thong Sala is home to a one-kilometer-long beach which is ideal for swimming and relaxation, and also a great spot for families.
It is backed by coconut palms and tropical fauna, which we definitely used to hide away from the harsh sun.
This may not be the most beautiful, but it has the advantage of having lots of shops and activities nearby. Thong Sala itself is the largest town in Phangan and has numerous shops as well as a food market where you can find all kinds of delicious food.
How To Get There: To get to Thong Sala Beach, you can take a songthaew or hire a scooter. It is pretty close to where the ferry dock so no doubt you will be passing by at some stage.
17. Baan Nai Wok
Baan Nai Wok Beach is 650 meters long and located on the west coast. It is relatively unknown but does end up being many traveler’s favorite.
Baan Nai Wok is covered with fine sand and is surrounded by swaying coconut trees. The water is typically a gorgeous shade of blue. Though it is not the best place for swimming as it stays quite shallow for a long way out, but it is very popular for water sports such as kiteboarding.
The tiny village of Baan Nai Wok, which is adjacent to Thong Sala and has just a few homes, is virtually unnoticeable when you drive or stroll past it.
How To Get There: The easiest way to get to Baan Nai Wok is by scooter or taxi.
18. Ao Plaay Laem
Ao Plaay Laem Beach is a serene and picturesque spot with clear waters and rock formations that create a unique landscape. It is situated at the foot of Khao Hin Nok, a granite mountain and provides a stunning view of Angthong National Marine Park.
The water is not very deep, but it is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It is also a great spot to watch the sunset.
You can enjoy a lazy afternoon soaking up the sun and relaxing in the calm waters.
How To Get There: To get to Ao Plaay Laem Beach, you can take a taxi from Thongsala Pier. The ride should take less than 10 minutes and cost around 100 THB / $4.60.
19. Wok Tum and Hin Kong
Wok Tum and Hin Kong are two serene beaches in Koh Phangan. Hin Kong Beach is located parallel to the main coast road and is an extension of Wok Tum Beach.
The coral reef lies about 300 meters off the shore, which makes it ideal for swimming during high tide. You can enjoy beautiful views, and breathtaking sunsets, in a spot which never seems to be overly crowded.
How To Get There: To get to Hin Kong Beach and Wok Tum Beach from Thong Sala, book a taxi or a scooter. The distance is approximately 4.5 kilometers and takes around 10 minutes by car.

21. Hin Ngam Beach
Hin Ngam Beach is a hidden gem located in the north of Koh Phangan.
This spot is unique in that it is covered in multi-colored pebbles instead of sand, which gives it a distinctive look. The name “Hin Ngam” means “beautiful stones” in Thai.
It is surrounded by shady trees and is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There is also a restaurant where you can sit and eat, or you can bring a towel to lie down and enjoy the view.
How To Get There: The best way to reach Ao Hin Ngam is by taxi or hiring a scooter which I highly recommend. It is about 12 kilometers from Thong Sala and takes around 25 minutes to drive.
22. Than Sadet Beach
Last up we have Than Sadet Beach which is a stunning hideaway on the east coast. It is about 300 meters long and is separated by a small freshwater estuary that comes down from a waterfall.
The sand is white and the sea is deep enough for year-round swimming, though be aware that the waves can be rough.
It is well worth having snorkeling equipment with you, as at both ends there are large rocks where you can find many colorful fish and coral.
Also, via a small rustic wooden bridge, you can reach the remote neighboring beach of Haad Thong Ra, which has no amenities or infrastructure but is ideal for spending a few peaceful hours.
How To Get There: To get to Than Sadet Beach you can drive along Ban Tai Road along the coast towards Haad Rin. In Ban Tai, turn left at the 7/11 crossroads and follow the road until the signposts take you right at the roundabout.

How To Travel Around Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is a relatively large island so if you want to explore the beaches you will definitely need some mode of transportation.
If you feel comfortable hiring a motorbike this is no doubt your best option for getting around and this was the option I chose.
Taxi prices will add up fast. Also, it will be fairly expensive to hire a longtail boat to take you around.
It is extremely easy to find a shop hiring motorbikes, but it may be hard to find somewhere that won’t scam you. Ask around to get opinions on a good hire spot. Also, Facebook groups can be helpful for this, or simply just asking around at your hostel like I did.
Either way, it is always a risk, but instead of handing over your passport, you can always ask to pay a deposit or hand over a second passport if you are lucky enough to have dual citizenship.
I am surprised at how well-maintained the majority of the roads are in Koh Phangan, especially compared to other places around Thailand. While on the island there was a lot of roadworks going on and potholes being filled.
Of all the places I road around Thailand Koh Phangan definitely had the nicest roads to drive on. It’s also a lot less quiet on the roads than in many other Thai tourist spots.
However, if you are looking at getting completely off the beaten track your best to head south to islands like Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi.
There is a mixture of quiet country roads, busy bustling villages, and wide highway-like streets around Koh Phangan. I had previously driven in Vietnam, but Koh Phangan was the first place I drove around Thailand and it was incredibly easy to do so.
Where To Stay In Koh Phangan?
Some of the best areas to stay in when traveling Koh Phangan include:
Haad Rin: This southern spot is one of the top areas to stay in Koh Phangan because it is the location of the famous Full Moon Party. You can certainly get your party on at least once a month, and even when the festivities are not raging, there are routine fire shows, beach bars, and chill dining options that perfectly suit a backpacker vibe.
Baan Tai: Running along the coast this is quite a spread out area along the shoreline. There are a mixture of accommodation options including everything from hostels to resorts. Its a good all rounder option with many things in close vicinity.
Thong Sala: Thong Sala is the main town of Koh Phangan and is a great place to stay if you want to be close to everything. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars, and it’s easy to get around the island from here. The town is also home to the main pier, so it’s a great place to stay if you’re coming from the mainland.
Srithanu: This is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe. The beach is beautiful and there are plenty of yoga studios and wellness centers in the area. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in Srithanu, so you won’t be lacking options.
Haad Yao: This is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a quieter experience. The beach is beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area.
If you are visiting Koh Phangan to party hard you can’t go wrong with staying at the Phangan Arena Hostel. It is a little bit more on the basic side when it comes to hostels, however, they put a big focus on catering for anyone looking to party and meet people.
Alternatively for something a bit nicer Tiki Beach Koh Phangan is an excellent option. Here you can find modern private rooms for $50.00 per night. They have a beachfront location, with an onsite bar and restaurant, did anyone say happy hour?

Other Things To Do In Koh Phangan
How many things do you really need to do when you’re in paradise? Not too many.
Though Koh Phangan has a wide array of activities to keep everyone busy.
Full Moon Party: The full moon party is probably the number one thing to do in Koh Phangan and is the reason the majority of travelers actually come here. Seriously during this time of the month, the island can receive an influx of 20,000+ travelers! There is a party every month, but here you can find exact dates and tickets cost $6.00 / 200 THB. Don’t worry if you can’t make those dates, there is also a half-moon party and a quarter-moon party.
Sramonora Waterfall: Next up, head to Sramanora Waterfall located on the South Side of Koh Phangan in Ban Kai Village. It is a simple 5-minute drive off the main road making it super accessible. What makes this waterfall a step above others on the island is the natural pool at the top.
Ang Thong Marine Park: If you snorkeled all of the beaches why not head out a bit further afield on a day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park? It is made up of 42 separate islands and is one of the best spots to snorkel in the Gulf of Thailand. Prices generally start around $30.00 for the day trip on a group tour.
Hike Khao Ra Mountain: Lastly, you could go for a hike up Koh Ra Mountain. This will give you some awesome views of the island. There is an entrance fee of $0.67 / 20 THB. The hike will take you around 3 hours return to complete. It is well-signposted so no need to have a guide. It starts at Khao Ra Retreat and then you can just follow the marked path from there.

I never made it to Koh Phangan while we lived in Thailand. This post is making me regret that! Lol
Honestly think Koh Phangan was one of my highlights of Thailand! It’s such a shame people only go there for Full Moon and then claim to hate it because they only see that side of it. We stayed on the opposite side of the island and it was like paradise! Sooo, so nice! I could happily go and spend a week there.
Your picture are so beautiful and relaxing that I want to get on a plane right now! I’ll save this post for when I finally get to Thailand, Koh Phangan will definitely be on my itinerary!
These beaches all look incredible. They remind me of the beach (the book)…at least before it gets all scary and horrible ;)
I always thought Thailand’s best beaches would be more busy than that, but these all look quite empty. Did you go early in the morning, or were they just pretty chilled areas?
