With raging water bucketing down the cliffside and sending mist spraying in every direction it is kind of hard to miss.

No wonder you probably want to go and explore it further, but is this even possible? Is there a hike you can do from the township or can you only see it from afar?

Well, I have explored the South Island including the gorgeous Milford Sound where I had the opportunity to explore the best of the area. Yes, by that, I mean watching the landscape come alive in the rain, it’s incredible.

Bowen Falls is located within Fiordland National Park near the township of Milford Sound.

This is considered one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand and is a highlight of exploring the country.

The magnificent Bowen Falls is framed by dense green foliage and rugged mountain terrain. The waterfall cascades down in a series of white, frothy tiers into the serene lake below. What’s So Great About Bowen Falls In Milford Sound?

No doubt Bowen Falls is quite the icon of Milford Sound, and for good reason! This impressive waterfall has a 162 meter drop from a hanging valley into the fjord below.

Of course, as you can imagine, this is even more spectacular after heavy rain. And with Milford Sound being the wettest place in New Zealand, this is a pretty common sight.

Also depending on the light and the angle you are standing at the mist from the waterfall can create quite a beautiful rainbow.

Bowen Falls is actually only one of two permanent waterfalls in Milford Sound. This means no matter what time of year or season you visit, it will be constantly flowing. However if you get a chance to experience Milford Sound in the rain go for it, this place really comes alive!

You may be surprised that this single waterfall actually supplies all the fresh water to the Milford Township. If you do the Lady Bowen Falls track, which I will let you know more about below, you can see some of the pipes.

Lady Bowen Falls Track

I know some articles online state the Lady Bowen Falls Track is open. However please note it is currently closed. I recommend checking the DOC Website for updates.

If you really want to get up and close to Bowen Falls your best option is doing the Lady Bowen Falls Track which will take you right up to the base.

However, you should know this track was actually closed for over 15 years due to safety concerns. Luckily enough they were able to reopen it now there is a boat operating that takes you from the the boat terminal to the start of the track.

You can purchase tickets from a machine inside the Freshwater Basin Terminal for $10.00 NZD / $6.00 for adults and $5.00 NZD / $3.00 for children.

There is no time schedule, rather that boat simply operates whenever someone is waiting and ready. It is only a short 120 meter ride as well so it doesn’t take long at all!

When you arrive at the other side you will jump off onto a small floating wharf and just let the boat driver know how long you would like to spend here. It’s only a few minutes walk to the base of the falls through native forest.

This is definitely a unique way to experience the falls, and not super touristy like the boat cruises can be. It’s a great option if you are staying the night in Milford and have a bit of extra time to kill.

Heads up, you are in Milford Sound, so you will no doubt come across plenty of sandflies! So much sure to pack some bug repellent, unless you want them to literally drive you crazy!

Now one of the most popular ways to experience and witness Bowen Falls is by taking a boat cruise on the technically fjord, but known as a sound.

Anyways, checking things out from the water will allow you a different perspective to really admire its beauty and strength. From the shoreline of the township you can really only see a small portion of the waterfall, however seeing it straight on is next level!

One of my personal favorite parts of a boat cruise is the beautiful photos you can get looking back to Milford Township with the impressive waterfall stealing the shot to the side of the frame. This is no doubt such a spectacular place to live.

Pure Milford: Specializing in small-group eco-cruises, Pure Milford offers a variety of options, including scenic cruises and coach-cruise-coach day trips. Their focus on environmentally friendly practices ensures that you can enjoy the beauty of Milford Sound sustainably. The price is $125.00 / $76.00 per person and it can be booked online.

RealNZ: A larger operator, RealNZ provides a range of cruise options from nature and scenic cruises to overnight adventures. Their vessels are equipped with spacious viewing decks, allowing passengers to take in the panoramic views of the fiord comfortably. You can book online for $135.00 NZD / $82.00 per person.

Southern Discoveries: Known for their comprehensive range of cruise experiences, Southern Discoveries offers nature cruises, scenic cruises, and kayaking trips. They also run the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory, where visitors can see the unique underwater environment of the fiord. As you can see you have an awesome bunch of decent options to choose from. They are all relatively similar in price and what they offer so I recommend looking into the finer details to figure out which one will be best for you.

Where To Stay In Milford Sound

A good thing to note is accommodation in Milford Sound is super limited and gets booked out fast. You will 100% need to book in advance, even a couple of months in winter, to secure a spot.

The only option in the township is called Milford Sound Lodge which has beautiful private riverside chalets. Staying here allows you to experience the beauty of Milford Sound without the long drive back and forth from Te Anau. The lodge provides stunning views, excellent dining at the on-site Pio Pio restaurant, and easy access to the area’s attractions.

Alternatively, if you are in a camper you can look at booking Rainforest Campervan Park where I stayed. They have great shared facilities and the campsites are right amongst nature. We saw numerous kea and bowling ball round wood pigeons.

If these two options are fully booked, consider staying in Te Anau, which is about a two-hour drive from Milford Sound. Te Anau offers a large variety of accommodation choices, from budget-friendly motels, and upscale lodges to backpackers.
